Earlier this week Internode announced the 'launch' of its naked DSL services, NakedExtreme in Tasmania but it is not presently able to connect any customers to this service.

Competition in the Australian voice and broadband market just got a lot hotter with Optus announcing a naked DSL service running at ADSL2+ speeds, meaning customers can now take out a broadband DSL plan without having to pay an added PSTN telephone line rental charge. Optus, Australia's second largest broadband provider, joins the number three ISP iiNet and a bevy of smaller providers now offering naked DSL plans, putting further pressure on Telstra's PSTN business.

Internode has launched 'NakedExtreme' - its ADSL2+ service delivered on the unconditioned local loop from its own DSLAMs - saying it is able to connect customers up to 7.5kms from the exchange, in contrast to the 4.1km limit with services delivered in conjunction with an analogue telephone service on the same copper pair.

iiNet, Australia's third largest ISP, has announced an underlying profit after tax of $17.8 million for the year to 30 June 200 on the back of strong take up of its naked DSL service, an increase of 50 percent and exceeding earlier market guidance.
